And how can i tell? I would assume that a keyword with 100,000 monthly searches and 100% competition (on google keyword tool) is very difficult to get to page one of google-but some one has got the top rank on google so it's not impossible...|||You are confused.
There's a big difference between the natural search ranking (left hand side) and paid search results (right hand side).
If you're talking about natural search ranking, then monthly search volume and competition on google keyword tool are not indicative. The ranking depends entirely on which websites are competing with you.
If you're talking about paid search results, then competition on google keyword tool becomes important. It's never very accurate by the way. The best way is to look at the no. of actual ads and the quality of these ads.
Less competitive keywords (i.e long tail keywords) may be a good start. Those competitive keywords (i.e with one or two words) are typically expensive and not close to the buying intent. So this is a good strategy.
